Lessons to Think About: Is This All There is in Life?

Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011
The following lesson was prepared by Fidel Gallevo.
"But seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added unto you." - Matthew 6:33

More often than not, we encounter this kind of question: Is this all there is in this lifetime? Every human being - rich or poor, mighty or lame, famous or infamous - is faced with this realism. You could be the President of the United States of America, the Queen of England, an Afghan soldier, or a dying senior in a nursing home in Russia. You’ll be confronted by a deep yearning, but all the things around you wouldn’t do any good. It’s like a feeling of incompleteness, as if one of your arms wasn’t there anymore or there’s a missing piece in a puzzle game you’re playing. What, then, would complete a person and what will it take to have it? It’s about coming to terms with our Creator, knowing His very purpose for His creation, and doing His will for our good and the good of all.

As a case study, let’s look into the lives of these two well-known personalities: Mother Teresa of Calcutta, India, and Princess Diana of England. Did you know that they both died in 1997? But how did they live their lives? Was there any “blank page” to find in their Book of Life? Mother Teresa was quoted, “...as to my heart, I belong entirely to the Heart of Jesus.” In a nun’s habit when she found the Lord, she was able to establish the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India that minister to the poorest of the poor.

Upon her death, she was beatified and given the title: Blessed Teresa of Calcutta by Pope John Paul II. What about Princess Diana? A typical ‘Cinderella’ girl who spent her entire life in misery after marrying the future King of England and beyond. She lived a glamorous lifestyle but behind the limelight, deep and hurtful conflict surmised, which print and broadcast media around the world hyped about. Then, on that fateful day in August, the car she was riding slammed into the 13th concrete post of the tunnel under Place de Alma in Paris, France, caused by a high-speed chase by paparazzi. As reported in Wikipedia: "In her burial, a set of rosary beads was placed in her hands, a gift she had received from Mother Teresa, who died the same week as Diana." Biography Online has added: "Shortly before her death, June 18th Princess Diana met with Mother Teresa. Both admired each other." Mother Teresa always said “Diana is my daughter.” With utmost humility Diana said “I am a very, very small Mother Teresa.” What do you think was the last entry in the Book of Life of Lady Diana Frances Spencer, Princess of Wales?

Like a scene at Golgotha more than 2000 years ago, a thief who was also to die on the cross had asked this from the Lord: Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom. The Lord responded: “Today you will be with me in Paradise.” It’s never too late to find meaning in this crazy world we live in. If you are caught up in this situation, try JESUS. He knows the Way, the Truth, and the Life. You need nothing more!
