Blog: Visitor's Manual

In this page, you will find everything you need to know about the CMPC Blog. This page was especially made for people who have only recently learned about or are completely unfamiliar with blogs. In order to make information easier to find, the page has been organized in "frequently asked questions" (FAQ) format.

General

What is a blog?

Put simply, a blog (short for "web log") is an online journal. Blog content (hereby referred to as "entries") are usually dated, and are typically organized in reverse-chronological order, thereby allowing readers to access and read past entries.
One of the most distinctive blog features is commenting, whereby readers are given the chance to post replies to a blog entry. These replies will be visible to the public; thus, other visitors/readers may post a comment in response to the comment of another user.

What topic(s) will the blog entries cover?

In general, blog entries will cover any topic related to our Catholic faith, with emphasis on how we should live our lives as followers of our Lord Jesus Christ. Although critical viewpoints are allowed when posting comments (provided that they adhere to the guidelines), blog entries will always be representative of Catholic beliefs, doctrines, policies, etc.
News items will typically not be posted as blog entries, although there might be a few exceptions. In particular, updates to the CMPC blog will be announced via the blog (even if they are already announced in the CMPC website homepage). Additionally, reviews, reports, or any retrospective analyses of recent CMPC events will be added to the blog. Generally, any other news items will be announced via the homepage.

How do I go from one page of the blog to another?

The blog has been set up such that only the five most recent entries appear on the first page (i.e., the main blog page). Older entries are stored in subsequent pages of the blog.

In order to view different blog pages, use the "Prev", "Next", "First", and "Last" links located near both the top and bottom of each page. These links are explained below.

  • Prev - Links to the page preceding the one currently being viewed
  • Next - Links to the page following the one currently being viewed
  • First - Links to the first page of the blog
  • Last - Links to the last page of the blog

Adding Comments

How do I add a comment?

To add a comment, click on the "Comments: #" link (where # is replaced by the number of comments to date) found below each blog entry. Doing so will take you to a page dedicated solely to the corresponding entry. Once you have reached this page, you will see a section near the bottom of the page consisting of text boxes and text areas. Your comment will then have to be written on the text area (the larger box). If you are not registered to Yahoo!® but would like to show your name on the post, you may do so by typing your name on the text box labeled "Author". You may also include your e-mail address or your website URL in your comment, if you wish.
Once you have finalized your post, you wil be asked to type a series of characters shown on an image. This verification process is carried out in order to prevent spambots (or anything of that nature) from posting.
After carrying out the above steps, click on "Post Comment" to make your comment visible to the public

Why is my name listed as 'Anonymous'?

Posters who do not own a Yahoo!® account (or are not signed in to their Yahoo!® account) will have their names listed as 'Anonymous' at the beginning of their posts.

If I am not a member of Yahoo!®, can I still show my name?

If you wish to show your name, you can either register for a Yahoo!® account (in which case your username will be shown), or type in your name on the text field labeled "Author". In the latter case, your name will be shown at the end of your post - not at the beginning.

Is there a character limit?

Yes. Posts may not exceed 4000 characters, including whitespace. If you wish to post a longer comment, you may do so by posting more than once. However, in order to make the blog more orderly, please indicate (in each post) that your subsequent comments are continuations of previous comments.

Writers

Who writes the blog entries?

Blog entries are primarily written by the web administrator and the Servant Leaders (see Members). Sometimes, guest writers may be invited to write their own entries. These guest writers may include (but are not limited to) the Spiritual Director (Fr. Paul Chu) and CMPC members.

Can I submit my own blog entries?

Yes! If you wish to have your own entry featured on the CMPC blog, you must submit the entry to the webmaster, who will then review the entry. If the webmaster decides to have your entry featured on the blog, you will be notified of the decision by e-mail. Most entries will be accepted, but entries may occasionally not get featured for different reasons (e.g., entry is too similar to another entry, entry does not follow blog guidelines, etc.). If the webmaster decides not to feature your entry, he will inform you of the decision by e-mail, stating his rationale.
Entries may be submitted by both CMPC members and non-members. Please read the Blog Guidelines carefully before submitting an entry.
